April 25, 2017 - Dubois, WY. - Always innovating, River Pilot is working to create the worlds first autonomous vehicle tour, across 8 states, on one of the worlds most beloved roads, Route 66.
Its fitting that one of the most well known roads in the USA be the template for autonomous driving tours. This category of travel, at this time, does not exist. However, River Pilot and team know that they will be able to partner with autonomous vehicle companies and government agencies to provide the approvals needed to make this happen. Those approvals should then make the technology easier to deploy by adding knowledge, predicability and structure.
The category of autonomous vehicle tours will begin in 2017. From there, as the technology meets the goal, we will eventually have vehicles driving themselves, remote operators intervening or a hybrid of the vehicle and human working together to take people along a defined path or point to point. Once the tour is done, the car can be dispatched back to its beginning location by itself.
River Pilot invented the most accurate and robust Route 66 information guide, used by commercial tour companies and personal travellers in 2011. From that time on, we have been working on ways to improve the Route 66 experience and bring it to visitors of the famed road.
At this time, given the permit process for self driving cars, it would be wise to demonstrate this technology and concept in the states of California and Arizona. The River Pilot team will work with self driving car companies to define the road, ensure accurate path navigation and perfect platform integration. Viva Route 66. Approaching 100 years alive and well.
